Journey to the Center of the Earth Piano Suite in Five Movements (2024)

I. The Shadow of Scartaris
II. The Mushroom Forest
III. A.S. (Old Alchemist Song)
IV. Lost in the Labyrinth
V. A Duel of Antediluvian Monsters

Inspired by Jules Verne’s classic 1864 science fiction novel Journey to the Center of the Earth, this five-movement piano suite, composed in 2024, embarks on a vivid musical retelling of the novel’s most striking scenes.

Through a rich palette of extended piano techniques, the suite captures the narrative arc and dramatic atmosphere of Verne’s subterranean adventure. The opening movement begins with the search for clues in nature—revealed only once a year by the shadow of mountain peak Scartaris that points the way to the passage to the Earth's core, located in a volcano crater. Hesitant footsteps, the deciphering of cryptic signs, and a blurred line between illusion and reality all culminate in a symbolic modulation: a shift from the persistent key of C minor to a cautiously emerging C major chord—at once a metaphor for shadow and the first triumph of discovery.

The second movement conjures a surreal forest of towering mushrooms—mistaken at first for trees—through hazy bitonal harmonies that evoke a hallucinogenic atmosphere. This fantastical vision is drawn from a mysterious parchment written by the fictional 16th-century Icelandic alchemist Arne Saknussemm. A musical cryptogram, derived from his initials (A and Eb), forms the basis of an imaginary ancient melody, played in the style of period instruments such as the lute or harp.

The suite’s final two movements delve into darker terrain. The third movement portrays the psychological and physical ordeal of the young protagonist Axel, lost in the underground labyrinth and teetering on the edge of survival. This is followed by a dramatic underwater battle between prehistoric sea monsters—a scene of primeval chaos rendered through a primal pentatonic scale and unpredictable rhythmic clashes. Originally conceived as a four-hand piano duet (available in both solo and duo version), this movement imagines the confrontation as a fantasy duel.

The suite aims to present contemporary pianistic expression in a way that is both accessible and imaginative, particularly for younger audiences—or indeed, for anyone young at heart, open to embarking on their own musical journey inspired by the boundless imagination of Jules Verne.
